The beginner’s section kicked off with some resounding victories, with Stacy Stanfield, Holly Bullock, Kelsey Washbrook and Finbarr Elwell all taking a maximum 7 flags. The enthusiasm and energy displayed by all the novices setting a fantastic example for the more experienced competitors who followed.
Watching with particular trepidation were the Duckhouse family who have a long history with the club, with Brian’s daughter Holly pitted against his sister Margaret’s daughter Jordan, the faces of the parents and indeed the grandparents reflecting the conflicting emotions they must have been feeling. On this occasion Holly performed a particularly strong kata and was successful but I’m sure her cousin will be keen for revenge come 2011.
The final saw Holly taking on Ben Davies who was in excellent form and narrowly achieved victory 4 flags to 3.
The Intermediate section saw just two competitors Joe Drakeley and Lauren Coggins. Both fought hard with Joe’s determination winning through to 1st place.
Which brought us to the champion’s league with the impressive Samurai trophy incentive for some truly inspiring kata’s. Here we saw some of the youngest and newest members of the club taking on experienced black belts..and giving them a run for their money.
There were yet more family showdowns with brothers Abdul and Asim in the 1st round and their cousins Henna and Jayna Bains against each other in the quarter final’s which saw Abdul and Henna winning through to the semis.
A tense final saw old adversaries Jack Mason and Henna Baines fighting it out for the championship. It was a close one, with judges having to choose between jack’s strength and speed and Henna’s precision and style. Jack was finally crowned champion taking 4 flags to Henna’s 3.
