J.J KARATE ACADEMY OPEN
November 2010
The Sneyd only took seven competitors to the last J.J karate academy open of the year, so that meant winning the Oliver Pryce memorial trophy for best team for a third successive time was out of the question, First up for Sneyd were Umar and Abdul Hussain, Abdul performed Heian Sandan and Umar did Heian Shodan and it was younger brother Umar who got into the last six play off he lost out on third by only a couple of marks. Next up for Sneyd were Russell Stanton, Joe Drakeley and Jordan Smith sadly for Russell and Joe they both missed out on the final six play off by only the smallest margin, but Jordan managed to get into the play and like Umar before him he also missed out by a couple of points. Asim Hussain once again added to his growing collection of medal by grabbing a well deserved silver after performing the kata Heian Nidan in the 13-16 years beginner to 6th kyu category. Our final competitor of the day was Karl Mason who performed the kata's Kanku Sho and Unsu to a mesmerised and silent hall who then showed their appreciation by applauding Karl like he was one of their own. It goes without saying well done to all that performed and supported...

J.J KARATE ACADEMY OPEN
J.J ACADEMY OPEN JULY 2010
The competition began like most others with the youngest competitors kicking off the day, meaning Cameron Palmer would be up first up for Sneyd. In previous competitions Cameron’s nerves have got the better of him, but not this time. Cameron proved to be too strong for the opposition, winning his first ever competition in style! Up next was Ben Davies and Umar Hussain and like Cameron, Umar claimed gold with his first ever win, with Ben grabbing bronze much to his mum’s delight. Continuing Sneyd’s challenge was Abdul Hussain, Sean Randall, Lauren Coggins and Chloe Teager. This was their first time competing in a higher category and all gave personal best performances resulting in Abdul attaining bronze for his efforts however Sean, Lauren and Chloe just missed out this time as did Elizabeth Brandrick who again competed for the first time in a higher, more difficult category. Asim Hussain completed a family 123 achieving second place to add to his and his brothers growing tally of silverware! Another first time success was Matthew Ellis who won gold competing in the 10-11 years, 3rd Kyu. In the same category Jordan Smith, representing Sneyd for the first time achieved second place and completing a fantastic 123 for Sneyd was Russell Stanton! Daniel Tarbet claimed the bronze in the beginners - 4th kyu, 14-16 years category. Lee Mason was arguably in the toughest category of the day and he got a really well deserved bronze with brother Jack Mason firing his way to gold after taking to the mat in the 14-16 years, 3rd Kyu and above section. Completing the Mason brother’s challenge, older brother Karl stomped home to another confident victory with Mitchell Gibbons missing out on the medals by only the smallest of margins. Carl Hassell, Prem Bains and David Hodson were in action in the Masters section with Dave and Prem just missing out but Carl grabbed a well-deserved bronze. The final category saw Karl and Jack Mason competing in the pair’s event with a spectacular team kata demonstration, achieving gold and taking Sneyd’s tally to six gold two silver and six bronze. All of these efforts and achievements resulted in Sneyd winning team of the day trophy much to the delight of Team Sneyd!
The efforts and team spirit was tremendous and all of the hard work in training continues to bring home the silverware! But equally important the support given by teammates, family, friends and instructors was again fantastic (and very loud) and makes us all so proud to be part of such a fantastic family club – bring on the chocolate biscuits!!!!

J.J KARATE ACADEMY OPEN
April 2010
It’s been just five months since we were here last but having tasted success all of Team Sneyd was itching to compete again. As last time it was Jake Froggatt in the 1st category. The youngest of Sneyds’ competitors at just 7 years old took to the centre of the mat and performed a sharp Heian Shodan. He was loudly applauded by the large crowd when he finished and after the round was completed was awarded 1st place by the judges and so retained his title. What a way to start a competition!
Next up were Chloe Teager, Lauren Coggins, and brothers Umar and Abdul Hussain. All four youngsters were on their best form showing that they had obviously been practicing the basics of Shotokan Karate. It was a tough group, however, Abdul showed the rest how to go one place higher than he had done last time around with his quick head turns and sharp hip twists on each turn to take 1st place.
Category 3 saw Stacy Stanfield hitting all her stances but narrowly missing out on 1st place. Maybe with a bit more power (she was the smallest of the competitors in her group) she has the potential to be a winner. Following this the competition started to look a bit strange but only for the fact that several categories were competing on the same mat at the same time. Did this faze the kids from Sneyd? Not one iota, with Elizabeth Brandrick, Asim Hussain and Dan Tarbet all impressing greatly to get 1st places in their respective categories. Albeit Dan was in a category on his own or is that in a class of his own! As they say “You’ve got to be in it to win it.”
The Three Musketeers were up next: Matthew Ellis, Joe Drakeley and Russell Stanton. All for one and one for all and all that. They gave a good account of themselves, showing how much improvement they had made, and fought bravely to the end of their katas. It was a respectable result for Joe securing 3rd place after being the lowest grade in this category. Matching him in category 12 was Leanne Stanfield who put up a gutsy performance in a very tough group.
The Mason brothers were at it again winning trophies, but perhaps you wouldn’t have thought it would be the youngest sibling who would be trying to steal the limelight. Lee Mason came out on top in category 10 after showing sharpness and strength in a steady kata and having to dig deep in the playoff for 1st place. (Sorry Jackie but you’ll have to keep to your word!) While older brother Jack might have been in a tough category he also didn’t disappoint by winning quite easily. Next we had another family affair with father and son competing against each other. Mark Arnold obviously didn’t want his son Daniel winning quite so easily as last time! Although Mark gritted his teeth and put the pressure on Daniel it wasn’t to be, but showed that there’s still something left in the old dog. However, the result of a 1-2 was more than welcome by the team and its supporters as the applause got louder.
Strangely, however, in the next round all things stopped and silence fell in the hall as everyone watched the oldest Mason brother Karl take to the mat. Another assured performance earned him 1st place while Carl Hassell and Mitchell Gibbons just missed out in this category. It was Carl Hassell stepping up again and just pipping Prem Bains into 2nd place in the over 35’s.
The last few categories were the pairs and the crowd were alive to see the outcome of the new partnership of Jayna Bains and Lee Mason. The pair performed an excellent Bassai Dai in time with each other but went into a play off. They stepped up again with Heian Shodan and showed they have a bright future in this event by achieving 1st place quite easily. The established pairing of Henna Bains and Jack Mason were in a class of their own and out pointed the other pairs with ease. The father and child pairing of Prem Bains and Jayna Bains narrowly missed out on the placings in the last category which was also won by Sneyd who fielded another new pairing. Karl and Jack showed that they are not just winners on their own but are a potent force together.
The day ended with the presentation of the winning club trophy. As if you couldn’t guess this went to Sneyd. Sensei Mick Davis accepted this with pride from Shihan Dr Josh Johnson. Forget the Cheshire Cat, what about the Milestone Man grin? Well done to all the competitors who took part and thanks to the many parents and friends who supported us all day long.

J.J KARATE ACADEMY OPEN
November 2009
Sneyd travelled the short distance to Wolverhampton for the J.J Academy karate open, taking the largest squad for quite sometime, and 14 of them were (newby's) never competed before and we wondered how we would fare. Here’s the tale of just a few first up Jake Froggatt, Cameron palmer, Umar Hussain, Sean Randall and Charlotte Gilruth all of whom are the tender age of seven were in their first competition so straight away we would see how they would cope, and they did not disappoint as they all gave it their best, the competition was on points and therefore the results were not clear until the last competitor had taken part, coming third was Umar Hussain, and with a smart Heian Shodan to take the title was Jake Frogatt... In the second category Abdul Hussain achieved 2nd place with another fine display…We had to wait till the 5th category for our next podium with another 2nd going to Joe Drakeley…The 8th category saw Asim Hussain trying to emulate his brothers and come away with silverware, Asim was clearly up for it and went on to win to make it a clean sweep for the brothers…Another success was to quickly follow with Kyle Randall coming away with 1st place in the 12-13 years old, 7th kyu – 4 kyu category… In the dan category 3rd place for Henna Bains and 1st for Jack Mason…Daniel Arnold came away with a gold in the 16-17 years 7th kyu – 4 kyu…And his dad Mark took silver in his event…Karl Mason showed his class to get another gold…Carl Hassell got silver and David Hodson piped him to gold…The team kata the pairing of Jack Mason and Henna Bains once again came up trumps taking gold with an excellent Bassai Dai…In the final category of the day parent/adult and child pairs kata, up for us were father and daughter Prem and Jayna Bains who did Bassai Dai and also put in another very good display and came third…At the end of the day all the scores were counted up and we learned we had come second overall in the team of the day, only losing out by 2 points…Many of the kids who didn’t get placed, performed their personal bests and will be under pressure to repeat their displays in class well done to all of you…Final word about the support the parents played their part too with noisy but fair support…well done.
