The A.S.K.A Nationals

A.S.K.A Nationals Sunday 2nd December 2007

We travelled the short distance to Great Barr school and took our smallest ever squad to the Nationals but still managed to come away with a pleasing number of trophies.  First up we had four competitors in the boys and girls white and white and red belts event ...... they all performed really well especially as it was their first ever competition.  Matthew Ellis and Russell Stanton were both unfortunate to lose out in the quarter-finals however a determined Leanne Stanfield came home with a bronze and a stylish Kyle Randall achieved silver.  In the next category was Enzo Tamilio who also performed really well to return with a bronze.  Boys and girls 6th - 4th Kyu was next with Jayna Bains, Sam Barnard and Beau Aldridge competing and it was especially pleasing to see all three in fine form.  They all progressed through to the semi-finals beating some good opposition on the way.  The first semi-final saw Sam take on Beau and there was little between them but Sam got the vote leaving Beau to take a well deserved bronze.   Jayna then made it an all Sneyd final ........ Sam went first and produced a good Kata, so could Jayna respond and retain her National title.  She produced a quality Kata which saw her claim the gold with Sam thoroughly deserving his silver.  Henna Bains and Jack mason were next and sadly Henna lost out early on but Jack once again was not to be denied reaching and winning the final in style. Next up was Karl Mason and Prem Bains.   Prem was up first and he produced an unusual form of Enpi, with pressure taking its toll the ice man had cracked.  So on to Karl, he was in sparkling form and stormed his way to win gold.  The finals were played out ......... one after another the competitors lined up with music playing they were introduced one by one with their clubs cheering them on, the atmosphere was electric resulting in a day to remember.  After a short break we came back for the Kumite - up first was Enzo Tamilio in the under 4’5 ft event and with determination he went on the final much to the delight of his team mates.  In the final he faced Adam Hexley of North Birmingham and with a deafening crowd and outstanding support for both lads, just when we thought it couldn’t get any better it did with young Enzo claiming a superb gold.  Up next was Jack Mason and for once it wasn’t to be for the strangely subdued Jack. On to our final event which saw young Karl Mason fighting against adults for the first time.  His first fight could not of been any tougher fighting the sublime Colin Simmonds and so it proved to be a tough start for Karl.   Colin went on to win gold in some style however Karl got his chance to come back in the repocharge and this time he was not to be denied as he fought his way through to claim a bronze with team mates bursting their lungs out ......... it was for us a special way to end another special day, many thanks to all that showed their support, proving that the well run Nationals again are always special for all ASKA clubs.

 The Seaford open

 Seaford Sunday 20th July 2008

We travelled down to Seaford with only a small number of competitors yet still managed to come away with an incredible amount of trophies.  The day started unusually with the weapons event but this was to accommodate late arrivals however any thoughts it might catch us cold were quickly dispelled.  Jack Mason had the honour of getting the whole event underway and with his swashbuckling style he got of to a flyer.  After a few more competitors it was the turn of Prem Bains.  Prem was competing for the first time in a weapons event and after a good performance he came in a respectable joint fourth place.   Up last for us came Karl Mason and then after an assured display we found that brothers Karl and Jack had the same scores, however after the lowest score was taken off, Karl was declared victorious.  Then up next it was the turn of the team event ......... brothers Karl and Jack were joined by Henna Bains and they produced excellent performances to reach and win the final.   The boys and girls Kata 10-15 years old, 3rd Kyu and above included Jack, Henna and Jayna Bains the category was so large it was divided onto two separate mats.  After beating tough opposition Jack and Henna both won their areas to come face to face in the final.   Jayna lost out in the quarter finals after beating some good opponents.  The final was a repeat of our club competition and once again Jack was victorious over Henna.  And so onto the men’s 3rd Kyu and above - Prem lost out early but Karl showed true quality and went all the way to the final in which he performed a superb Unsu.  To a silent hall all eyes were on Karl as he claimed his second win of the day.  The masters were next, with Prem returning again to be joined by Dave Hodson.  Prem was unlucky to lose in the opening round with Dave following him in round 2, but both lost to much older and wiser opponents!  Our last competitor of the day was Karl, fighting in the men’s team Kumite with Colin Simmonds and Patrick Caines of North Birmingham representing ASKA.  They all fought well and picked off some quality fighters and eventually went all the way to win a hard bruised final.  Colin later went on to win both the men’s and masters kumite and Patrick went on to win the men’s intermediate kumite, well-done lads.  In between the Kata and Kumite events Seaford’s Chief Instructor and tournament organiser Martin Dean was awarded his fifth dan and our own Dave Robinson was awarded his fourth dan.  Dave has travelled far and wide, refereeing tournaments and has always represented ASKA and Sneyd with distinction and honour.  Well-done to both of you.
